PREVIEW: No. 1/2 Men's Lacrosse begins 39th NCAA Tournament run on Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1/2 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team is set to begin its journey back to Hartford when they host the Stockton Ospreys on Saturday, May 14 at Sea Gull Stadium for the second round of the NCAA tournament.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • Salisbury finished the regular season with an 18-1 record and won the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) championship, 15-10, over then No. 1 Christopher Newport. Salisbury earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
  • The offense is led by C2C Offensive Player of the Year Cross Ferrara. Ferrara leads the team in points (99) and goals (76). The graduate senior currently sits sixth in Division III with 4.00 goals per game.
  • On defense, the Sea Gulls are paced by All-C2C First Team selection John DeFazio, who leads the Sea Gulls with 32 caused turnovers and ranks second on the team with 76 ground balls.
  • Salisbury looks to C2C Tournament Most Valuable Player Z.J. Shahin to stop opponents' shots. Shahin has been a brick wall with best goals-against average (7.18) in the C2C.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • Stockton finished the regular season with a 16-2 overall record and won the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship to secure its automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
  • Stockton defeated UMass-Boston on May 11, 26-11, in the first round of the tournament.
  • The Ospreys are 7-0 on the road this season.
  • Stockton's had a high-powered offense this season. The Ospreys led NCAA Division III with 20.28 goals per game, 391 goals and 241 assists.
  • Stockton's defense allowed 9.74 goals per game.

SCOUTING THE OSPREYS

  • Dante Poli leads the team in points (131) and assists (68) with 63 goals scored.
  • Luc Swedlund is the leading scorer with 86 goals.
  • Tyler Horvath takes the majority of faceoffs and holds a 68.6 faceoff win percentage.
  • Logan Holleritter leads the defense with 31 caused turnovers and 81 ground balls.
  • Eric Lindskog has tallied 159 saves and allowed 164 goals for a 49.2 save percentage and a 10.96 goals-against average.

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The winner of Saturday's contest will take on the Cabrini-Washington & Lee winner on Sunday, May 15 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Opening faceoff for the third-round matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
