GENEVA, Ohio – Triple jumper Rashawn Markman of the Salisbury University track and field teams capped his sensational freshman campaign with his best performance yet, setting a new personal record on the way to All-America honors and a seventh-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, which concluded on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute.
RESULTS
Markman, a native of Waldwick, N.J., used his second of six triple jump attempts to leap 15.01 meters (49-3), breaking his old personal record by 0.12 meters. He finished one slot above his seeding, taking seventh place after entering with the eighth-best qualifying mark.
With a top-eight finish, Markman becomes the 78th track and field All-American in Salisbury history and the first outdoor All-American in four years. The last Sea Gulls to claim outdoor All-America laurels were Donovan Beckett-Simms (triple jump) and Duncan Ferrin (hammer throw) in 2018. Markman is also the first Sea Gull freshman to garner All-America status since Beckett-Simms did it four years ago.
Markman was one of two SU athletes to compete at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Cameron Hasko set school and conference records on the way to finishing 13th in the javelin throw on Thursday.
"We had an outstanding NCAA Championships meet with what Cameron and Rashawn accomplished," said Sea Gull head track and field coach Jim Jones. "Today, Rashawn took what he learned from the indoor championships and used it to achieve his goal. What a great way for him to finish the year as an All-American.
"I also want to thank Coach Chris Leby and Coach Delia Mack for working together to help Rashawn develop during his first year at Salisbury University."
With his first All-American trophy in tow, Markman closes the books on one of the great freshman seasons in Sea Gull track and field history. During the winter, he was named Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Athlete of the Year and Rookie of the Year after winning conference titles in the long jump and triple jump, setting a new school indoor triple jump record (14.50m, 47-7) in the process. In March, Markman competed in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 16th.
Markman was just as dominant in the spring, winning the C2C outdoor triple jump title for his third conference gold. He also took home the silver in the long jump and was part of Salisbury's second-place 4x100-meter relay team.
