Markman, Zimmerman win titles to open rain-soaked C2C Outdoor Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams saw two athletes win their events and three others finish second during a rain-soaked opening day at the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Outdoor Championships, hosted by Christopher Newport at TowneBank Stadium on Friday evening.

RESULTS

The Sea Gull men lead team scoring after three completed events with 34 points, two better than second-place CNU's 32. St. Mary's (Md.) [16], Mary Washington (10) and UC Santa Cruz (1) round out the top five, and Pratt earned no points on the opening day.

The Sea Gull women tallied 27 points after four completed events, good for third place behind CNU (56) and Mary Washington (33). St. Mary's earned five points, while UCSC and Pratt failed to pick up points for the day.

As of press time, three scheduled events – the men's pole vault and both 10,000-meter runs – have not been completed due to inclement weather.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men

  • Travis Zimmerman repeated as conference champion in the hammer throw, clocking a distance of 53.07 meters (174-1) on his final throw of the day. Zimmerman is now a four-time C2C gold medalist after winning the indoor weight throw title in February and the outdoor shot put and hammer throw championships in 2021.
  • Rashawn Markman leaped a personal-best 14.89 meters (48-10.25) on the way to winning gold in the triple jump. Markman adds another championship to a remarkable freshman campaign that saw him win conference titles in the indoor long jump and triple jump in February.
  • Luis Smith earned a silver medal in the shot put with a distance of 13.58 meters (44-6.75), finishing just one-tenth of a meter shy of the winning mark. Smith also earned points in the hammer throw, finishing sixth at 38.50 meters (126-4).
  • Jacob Shelton qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter dash, posting the third-best preliminary time of 11.09 seconds.

Women

  • Alexandra Jakubowski finished second in the hammer throw with a personal-best distance of 38.09 meters (125).
  • Sophia Crozier-Carole gave the Sea Gull women another silver medal, placing second in the pole vault at 2.98 meters (9-9.25).
  • Courtney Martin (16.94), Danielle Jensen (16.97) and Lian Peach (18.09) each qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in the prelims.
  • Sydney Ruckel was leading the 10,000-meter run when the race was stopped due to lightning around the 8,000-meter mark. The race will be run again in its entirety on Saturday.

  • The C2C Outdoor Track & Field Championships will conclude on Saturday with events beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m.
