SALISBURY, Md. – An overtime penalty stroke proved to be the deciding factor as the sixth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team prevailed 2-1 over the third-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on Wednesday under the lights at Sea Gull Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johns Hopkins held the early advantage in the game. After defensive saves by Hannah Johnson and Isabel Larrabee as well as back-to-back saves by Mackenzie Peacock, Siena Urbanski netted the opening goal of the contest in the fifth minute of the game.
- Salisbury took advantage of a turnover in the attacking midfield to push the ball ahead and tie the ballgame. Alayna Gigliotti passed ahead to Molly Reardon, who inserted the ball in the arc. Allie Davis was right in front of the cage and ripped a shot near post to knot the game at one in the 11th minute of the contest.
- Peacock stood tall and withstood an early onslaught in the third quarter with three straight saves in the early parts of the second half.
- Both defenses locked down to send the game into 7-on-7 overtime.
- A foul in the arc two minutes into the overtime gave Salisbury a penalty stroke.
- Davis stepped up the spot and drained the penalty stroke to allow Salisbury to walk-off winners.
