SALISBURY, Md. - The 12th-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team continued its hot start to the season, pushing it's season-opening shutout streak to three games after a 5-0 victory over the Washington Shorewomen in the 2022 home opener under the lights at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It only took six and a half minutes for the Sea Gulls to get the scoring started. A turnover in the attacking midfield led to a McKenna Horner cross into the arc. The bounding ball found the stick of Allie Davis, who one-timed the shot into the back of the cage for the opening salvo of the game.
- A minute into the second quarter, the Sea Gulls earned a penalty stroke after a foul inside the arc. McKenzie Mitchell stepped up to the spot and drained the stroke to double the SU lead, 2-0.
- Another turnover in the attacking midfield led to a scoring opportunity in the 25th minute of the game. Allie Davis forced the change of possession and ricocheted a shot off of WAC's Ava Rivera. Rivera wasn't able to corral the loose ball as Horner cleaned up the rebound to add to SU's lead before halftime.
- A second effort by Mitchell added to the SU lead in the 32nd minute of the contest. Molly Reardon saved a ball from going out of bounds on the endline. Reardon passed the ball over to Mitchell, who's initial shot was saved by Rivera but Mitchell converted the rebound to push the Salisbury advantage to 4-0.
- Salisbury tacked on added insurance in the 53rd minute to ice the game. Hannah Johnson sent a cross into the arc which found Elle Wood in front of the cage for a one-timer and a goal.
