No. 5 Field Hockey’s winning streak ends at No. 6 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of sixth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains, falling 3-1 in a Wednesday afternoon Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) showdown at Jennings Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls wasted no time drawing first blood. Set up by a penalty corner, Madelyn Reed took a rebound and found the back of the cage to put SU on top 1-0 in the first minute of the game.
  • The Captains struck back early in the second quarter. In the 21st minute, Abby Asuncion took the fourth shot for CNU in rapid succession and finally got it past SU keeper Addy O'Donnell and into the net, tying the score at 1-1.
  • A mere 38 seconds later, Alexis Morales set up Caroline Hughlett for a quick strike to give the Captains a 2-1 lead.
  • CNU made it three tallies in the second quarter as Maddison Steele put a missed shot back into the cage to make it 3-1 in the 28th minute.
  • Salisbury unleashed a flurry of shots early in the third quarter, but CNU's Lily Kerr made back-to-back saves on two McKenna Horner attempts, and Brooke Billhimer got in front of a Mack Dinopoulos shot for a defensive save moments later.
  • SU outshot the Captains 9-5 in the fourth quarter, but Kerr denied three more chances on target to secure the victory for CNU.
