Women third, Men fourth as Track & Field opens C2C Indoor Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams picked up a handful of medals and saw several athletes qualify for event finals on the opening day of the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Christopher Newport University on Friday at the Freeman Center.
 
The Sea Gull women slotted in third place after four scored events with 18 points, ahead of fourth-place St. Mary's (Md.) [12]. Host CNU finished the day in first with 50 points, while UC Santa Cruz slotted second with 29 points.
 
The Sea Gull men capped the first day in fourth place after six scored events, notching 28 points. CNU (69), UCSC (43) and Mary Washington (35) ranked inside the top three.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Women
  • Marlyse Haack grabbed a bronze medal in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 4.94 meters (16-2.5). Emma Christman slotted in sixth at 4.44 meters (14-6.75).
  • The distance medley relay team of Marisa Servis, Destinee Ekanem, Kristen Riddell and Abby Simmons snagged a third-place finish in a time of 13:46.60.
  • Kailey Jarboe took fourth place in the weight throw at 9.34 meters (30-7.75).
  • Karia Forvil and Mia Hill each qualified for Saturday's 60-meter dash finals with impressive preliminary times. Forvil finished fifth in qualifying in a time of 8.19 seconds, while Hill came in sixth in 8.25 seconds, tying a personal best.
  • Alyssa Santoro grabbed a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:27.16. Madi Sisson (19:39.00) finished right behind in seventh.
Men
  • Jacob Shelton turned in the second-fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter dash prelims, earning a slot in Saturday's finals in a personal-best 7.01 seconds.
  • Gavin Shaffer qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a mark of 8.59 seconds to finish second.
  • Luis Smith captured the bronze in the weight throw, clocking in at 14.04 meters (46-0.75).
  • The distance medley relay team of Alec Velleggia, Thomas Niblock, Graham Schultz and Connor Kinch took third place with a time of 11:00.37.
  • Matt Grossi (15:45.00), Jason Cave (15:45.02) and Luke Petenbrink (16:03.35) finished fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run.
  • Sherrod Frye finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.45 meters (21-2). Zion Wamley came in sixth at 6.27 meters (20-7).
  • Andrew McGinley slotted fifth in the high jump at 1.84 meters (6-0.5).
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will continue chasing conference glory during the second and final day of the C2C Indoor Championships on Saturday.
  • First events at the Freeman Center are set to begin at 10 a.m.
