Smith wins 400, anchors winning 4x400 relay at C2C Indoor Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams took home 10 more medals, including a pair of golds, on the final day of the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
 
The Sea Gull men finished third in the team standings with 104 points, easily ahead of fourth-place Mary Washington (82). Hosts CNU won the team championship with 153 points, edging out second-place UC Santa Cruz (140).
 
The Sea Gull women took fourth place overall with 52 points. CNU (193), UCSC (147) and Mary Washington (62) took the top three team slots.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
  • Kai Smith won the Sea Gulls' first gold medal of the weekend, breaking the tape in the 400-meter run in a personal-best 50.74 seconds. Smith later finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.63 seconds).
  • Salisbury won a second gold in the 4x400-meter relay, as Thomas Niblock, Ryan Temple, Mike Heinz and Smith broke the tape in 3:27.02.
  • Heinz took the silver in the 400-meter run in 51.76 seconds, while Temple (52.09) finished sixth.
  • Jacob Shelton set a new personal record in the 60-meter dash, finishing second in 7.05 seconds.
  • Luis Smith (13.64m, 44-9) and Mason Breeze (personal-best 13.43m, 44-0.75) won the silver and bronze, respectively, in the shot put. JJ McCauley (personal-best 12.84m, 42-1.5) finished fifth, while Garrett Blasi (personal-best 12.09m, 39-8) took seventh.
  • Sherrod Frye nabbed second place in the triple jump at 13.61 meters (44-8). Jon Alicea finished close behind in fourth at a personal-best 12.93 meters (42-5.25).
  • Gavin Shaffer grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.84 seconds.
  • Declan Burke (4:33.87) and Connor Kinch (4:34.96) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the mile run.
  • Matt Grossi (9:02.53) took sixth in the 3,000-meter run, while Jason Cave (9:14.66) finished eighth.
Women
  • Lauren Knapp earned the silver medal in the pole vault, clearing 2.89 meters (9-5.75) to set a personal record.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Destinee Ekanem, Karia Forvil, Marlyse Haack and Mia Hill took home the bronze with a time of 4:15.65.
  • Kailey Jarboe posted a fourth-place finish in the shot put, smashing her personal best at 8.19 meters (26-10.5).
  • Hill (8.21 seconds) and Forvil (8.25 seconds) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Forvil (27.87 seconds) and Hill (27.95) later nabbed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
  • Haack took fourth in the triple jump at 9.73 meters (31-11.25), while Emma Christman finished right behind in fifth at 9.33 meters (30-7.5).
  • Grace Dear snagged fifth place in the 60-meter hurdles at 11.15 seconds.
  • Madi Sisson (11:07.01) and Alyssa Santoro (11:07.66) grabbed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run.
UP NEXT
  • Select Sea Gulls will return to Newport News for the CNU Qualifier on Sunday, Feb. 26.
  • The meet, meant for competitors to improve their marks and chances of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, will begin at the Freeman Center at 9 a.m.
