Track & Field competes at Richard Drake Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams completed their final tune-up before the indoor conference championships by competing at the Richard Drake Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Men

Kai Smith earned his first career individual title by winning the 200-meter dash, breaking the tape in a personal-best 22.17 seconds.
Declan Burke (4:29.66) and Matt Grossi (4:29.77) each posted personal bests on the way to taking second and third, respectively, in the mile. Jason Cave (4:34.39) also set a personal record to cross the line in sixth.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Thomas Niblock, Hayden Myers, Mike Heinz and Smith put together another impressive run, finishing second in 3:23.65.
Gavin Shaffer finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.80 seconds, while Travis Wingate crossed close behind in fifth in 8.94 seconds.
Luis Smith (14.39m, 47-2.5) grabbed third place in the weight throw, and Mason Breeze (personal-best 13.16m, 43-2.25) took sixth.
Luke Petenbrink notched a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in a personal-best 9:22.98.
Zion Wamley cleared a personal-best 6.58 meters (21-7.25) to finish fourth in the long jump.
Jacob Shelton took sixth place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.06 seconds, improving on his qualifying mark by two-hundredths of a second.

Women

Madi Sisson grabbed a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 11:12.41. Rachel Roberts also set a personal best at 11:14.70 in the event, finishing fourth.
Kailey Jarboe finished fifth in the weight throw, notching a personal-best 10.97 meters (36-0).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Erin Connelly, Marisa Servis, Destinee Ekanem and Abby Simmons crossed in fifth place in 4:40.24.
Marlyse Haack (personal-best 10.13m, 33-3) and Emma Christman (9.09m, 29-10) earned top-10 finishes in the triple jump, taking seventh and ninth, respectively.
Mia Hill finished ninth in the 200-meter run in 27.28 seconds, while Karia Forvil took 10th in 27.57 seconds. Both marks were personal bests for Hill and Forvil.
Simmons (5:47.09) and Servis (5:48.89) finished ninth and 11th, respectively, with personal bests in the mile.

UP NEXT

The Sea Gulls now turn their attention to the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships on Feb. 17-18.
The championship meet will be hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
