SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University track and field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season with a strong showing at the eight-team Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet on Saturday at the SU Track & Field Complex.

The Sea Gull men emerged the meet victor in a tight three-team race, finishing with 182 points to second-place Hartford's 178 and third-place Wilmington (Del.)'s 170. Delaware TC (48) and Marymount (Va.) [28] rounded out the top five.

The Sea Gull women placed third on the team side with 111 points. Hartford (223) and Wilmington (Del.) [131] took the top two slots, while Delaware TC (65) beat out Marymount (Va.) [64] for fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- Two-time defending Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) javelin throw champion Cameron Hasko took first place in the season's first meet with a distance of 51.76 meters (169-10). Hasko has finished top-five in the javelin in 15 of his 16 career meets, winning 11 times.
- Jon Alecia won the triple jump with a distance of 12.79 meters (41-11.5). Tyson Bowie finished in second at a personal-best 12.14 meters (39-10), and Zion Wamley took third at 11.93 meters (39-1.75) to give SU a sweep of the podium.
- Gavin Shaffer broke the tape in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the race in 15.36 seconds. He followed that up with third place in the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 1:04.38.
- Logan Kelsch won the discus throw in his first career showing at 44.01 meters (144-5). Mason Breeze finished third at 41.73 meters (136-11).
- Sherrod Frye recorded top-four finishes in all three of his events, taking second place in the long jump (6.37m, 20-10.75), third in the 200-meter dash (22.89) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.27).
- Andrew McGinley (1.85m, 6-0.75) and Dylan Haun (170m, 5-7) finished three-four in the high jump.
- Luis Smith posted a third-place finish in the shot put (13.43m, 44-0.75) and a fifth-place marker in the hammer throw (41.94m, 137-7), leading the Sea Gulls in both events.
- Keifer Thomas finished close behind Hasko in the javelin throw, taking third at 44.97 meters (147-6).
- Justin Tavares crossed third in the 400-meter run in 54.05 seconds.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Rajan Turner, Jacob duCellier, Alec Velleggia and Graham Schultz finished third in a time of 3:48.47.
Women
- Rachel Roberts earned the gold in the 5,000-meter run in 20:07.31, while Allyson Wagner finished right behind in second at 20:08.95.
- Mia Hill won the long jump with a personal-best 4.97 meters (16-3.75), and Marlyse Haack took second at 4.91 meters (16-1.5). Haack also finished second in the triple jump (10.42m, 34-2.25).
- Lauren Knapp cleared 2.50 meters (8-2.5) in the pole vault, good for second place.
- Karia Forvil (personal-best 27.50) took third place in the 200-meter dash, with Haack (28.05) crossing soon after in fourth.
- Grace Dear grabbed third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:23.52.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Erin Connelly, Maggie Dwire, Marisa Servis and Abby Simmons posted a third-place finish at 4:45.82.
- Forvil (12.90) and Hill (12.94) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash.
