FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams saw thrower
Luis Smith earn the Sea Gulls' first two gold medals on the first day of the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Saturday at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

The Sea Gull men ended Day One in second place with 47 points, trailing only first-place Christopher Newport (65) in the team standings. UC Santa Cruz (34), St. Mary's (Md.) [six] and Mary Washington (two) rounded out the top five.

The Sea Gull women also slotted second with 34 points. CNU finished the day on top with 85 points, with SU leading third-place Mary Washington (15), fourth-place UC Santa Cruz (12) and fifth-place St. Mary's (eight).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- In his final championship meet, Luis Smith won his first career conference titles in the hammer throw and the shot put. In the hammer, Smith recorded a distance of 46.77 meters (153-5.25), over three-and-a-half meters clear of the second-place finisher. Jacob Reeves also recorded a fifth-place finish at 42.10 meters (138-1.5).
- In the shot put, Smith's mark of 14.12 meters (46-4) rang in nearly half a meter ahead of second place. JJ McCauley (13.22m, 43-4.5) and Mason Breeze (12.97m, 42-6.5) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
- Four Sea Gulls qualified for Sunday's finals in the 100-meter dash, good for half the field of eight. Jacob Shelton broke the tape in the prelims in 10.81 seconds, followed by Sherrod Frye (11.03) in third, Rashawn Markman (personal-best 11.23) in sixth and Ryan Kramer (personal-best 11.30) in seventh.
- Gavin Shaffer posted the best qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.28 seconds. Travis Wingate will join Shaffer in the finals after finishing fifth in 16.41 seconds.
- Markman earned a silver medal in the long jump, setting a personal record at 6.96 meters (22-10). Zion Wamley (6.78m, 22-3) also broke his personal record on the way to the bronze.
- Sam Bodmer crossed third in the 10,000-meter run in 33:46.76.
Women
- Kailey Jarboe recorded a pair of personal records on the way to earning bronze medals in both the shot put (9.33m, 30-7.25) and hammer throw (31.13m, 102-1.5).
- Marlyse Haack (5.21m, 17-1) and Mia Hill (5.14m, 16-10.5) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump.
- Lauren Knapp took third in the pole vault after clearing 2.78 meters (9-1.5).
- Allyson Wagner took home a bronze in the 10,000-meter run in 41:09.86, a personal record.
- Karia Forvil qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash, finishing sixth in prelims in a personal-best 12.80 seconds.
