No. 4 Field Hockey clipped in penalty strokes at No. 2 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team endured its second straight heartbreaking defeat beyond regulation, falling to the second-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 2-1, after a 3-1 stroke-off on Wednesday night at Homewood Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a first quarter that saw neither team take a shot, the Sea Gulls earned the first scoring chance with a penalty corner six minutes into the second, but Blue Jays goalie Alexis Loder got in front of an attempt from Emma Radebaugh for a save.
  • One minute later at the 7:00 mark, Mikayla Schoff took a penalty corner feed from Siena Urbanski and deposited it in the back of the cage, putting JHU on top 1-0.
  • In the third quarter, the Salisbury defense withstood four straight Blue Jay penalty corners in the span of just one minute, getting in front of a pair of JHU shots to keep it a one-goal game.
  • With 2:06 remaining in the third, Molly Reardon split two defenders on the right seam and fed Marli McDorman inside the arc. McDorman in turn flicked it left past the goalie to Arden Hunteman, who sniped it into the cage to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Johns Hopkins unleashed a furious attack in the fourth quarter but the Sea Gulls denied all five attempts, with Addy O'Connell making a pair of saves to help force overtime.
  • The Blue Jays outshot Salisbury 3-1 in the first overtime, while the Sea Gulls returned the favor by outshooting JHU 3-1 in the second overtime.
  • Salisbury missed its first two stroke-off attempts before O'Connell stopped a Johns Hopkins try to keep it at 1-0 through the first two rounds. After each side converted in round three, Loder kicked away a Madelyn Reed attempt to set the Blue Jays up to win it. Gen Mehra charged forward and powered a shot by O'Connell, clinching the stroke-off, 3-1, and the match for JHU.
