Men’s Soccer scuffles to stalemate with St. Mary’s (Md.), 1-1

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – A second-half surge helped the Salisbury University men's soccer team escape its duel against the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The defensive units prevailed in the opening period. Salisbury outshot St. Mary's 4-3 in the opening half, with the Sea Gulls putting three on target to the Seahawks' one.
  • St. Mary's forced Josh Wendel to make just one save in the opening period, putting a shot in the lower left corner in the 34th minute that was handled to keep the match scoreless at the break.
  • The hosts grabbed the lead in the 51st minute when Jason Caro turned an ill-advised pass into the go-ahead goal, putting SMC on top 1-0.
  • After conceding the first score, the SU attack caught fire. The Sea Gulls rattled off eight shots in the next 19 minutes, putting five of them on goal.
  • Salisbury broke the dam in the 70th minute when a deflection from Sean Barwick landed at the feet of Dale Gordon, who guided the ball into the onion bag to even the match, 1-1.
  • The maroon and gold kept the pressure high throughout the final 20 minutes, but both back lines held firm to keep the match deadlocked at the final whistle.
