The Rundown

The fourth-seeded Salisbury University women's basketball team gets ready to chase its fifth conference championship at the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament in Newport News, Va. The Sea Gulls open tournament play against the fifth-seeded Mount Mary Blue Angels on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

  • Salisbury finished the 2023-24 regular season with an 8-16 record. The Sea Gulls posted a winning record at home, going 5-4 inside the Maggs Physical Activities Center.
  • The Sea Gulls' eight victories came by an average margin of 22.5 points. SU won all eight games by at least nine points and six of them by double-digit margins.
  • In Salisbury's home opener against Goucher on Nov. 15, the Sea Gulls put up their highest offensive output since December 2017, besting the Gophers 98-45.
  • SU closed the regular season with consecutive wins, going on the road to beat Lancaster Bible 81-62 on Feb. 10 before downing Gwynedd Mercy 62-44 at home six days later.
  • Mount Mary went 12-11 in the regular season, setting a new program records for wins in a single season. MMU enters C2C Tournament play winners of three of their last four contests.
  • The Blue Angels did not play against a C2C foe during the regular season; MMU faced the now-closed Finlandia twice last year.
  • Freshman guard/forward Brianna Mendez leads Mount Mary into the tournament averaging 10.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, ranking top-10 in the league in both categories. Mendez was recognized as C2C Rookie of the Year and made the All-C2C Second Team.
  • Sophomore forward Joselyn Gonzalez joins Mendez on the C2C rebounding leaderboard, slotting fourth with a team-best 7.4 boards per game.
  • This is the first-ever meeting between the Sea Gulls and Blue Angels, who hail from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and boast an all-women's student population of around 1,500.
  • The winner of the SU-MMU matchup will advance to face top-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m., with the semifinal winners squaring off in the C2C Championship Game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
  • Salisbury is seeking its fifth conference championship and first since winning the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC, now C2C) crown in 2015.
