No. 3 Field Hockey drops double overtime thriller at No. 1 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey program traveled to No. 1 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night and fell dramatically 2-1 during sudden-death overtime inside Jennings Family Stadium.

The teams were held scoreless in the first half, which was a tale of two quarters. The Sea Gulls (9-2) posted all three of their first-half shots in the first quarter, while the Captains (12-0) tallied their two first-half shots in the second quarter.

Both teams mustered up only one shot on goal. SU also won the penalty corner battle in the first half, with two compared to just one for CNU.
Both teams earned a penalty corner in the third period of action, while CNU outshot SU 3-1. With under five minutes left in the ball game, the Captains broke the scoring open and earned a 1-0 lead.

Just one minute and 12 seconds later, Tessa Gray found an equalizer for the Sea Gulls off an assist from Caroline Pusey. This would send the game into overtime.

The first overtime would go scoreless, sending the teams into double overtime. CNU found the game winner during a breakaway that would cross the goal line with under one second remaining in the second overtime.

Game Notes
- CNU posted 23 shots compared to 10 for SU. The Captains tallied 14 shots in overtime.
- The Captains also posted six more penalty corners than the Sea Gulls.
- Kelly Davis posted a season-high six saves, while the 23 shots were the most she has seen all season. 
- Regan Worley and Devon DeGregory both earned defensive saves.

The Sea Gulls will now head to Fredericksburg, Va., for a matchup with Mary Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 15th, beginning at 4 p.m.
