Unprecedented: McCallie becomes first Women’s Swimming All-American

Graduate student places 14th in 200 IM

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The historic ride for Sydney McCallie and the Salisbury University women's swimming team reached a new apex on Wednesday when McCallie became the first All-American in team history. McCallie (Gr. – Mineral Wells, W.V.) finished 14th in the 200-yard individual medley, earning Second-Team All-America honors on the first day of the 2025 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Seeded 19th out of 59 qualifiers in the event, McCallie improved by four positions in the morning's preliminary session, placing 15th with a time of 2:04.40 that was seven hundredths of a second off her school-record qualification time. The 15th-place mark put her through to the consolation final in the event and guaranteed her a spot on the All-America Second Team.

In the evening session, McCallie picked up one more position by finishing sixth in her heat at 2:04.73, good for 14th in the overall field.

McCallie is the second swimmer and first woman in SU history to earn All-America status, joining Chris Bembenek, who was a two-time men's All-American in 1998 (100 back, 200 back). She is now a five-time All-American in her collegiate career after making four All-America teams at Kenyon College from 2022-24.

With McCallie's three points, Salisbury is officially ranked 22nd in the women's team standings after the first day of the championships.

McCallie will compete in her second event at the NCAA Championships on Thursday; she is seeded eighth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:23.69). Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m.
