SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Kean University Cougars 14-1 in the second half to roll to a 23-8 victory in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) opener at Sea Gull Stadium.
Chris Wong powered a quick three-goal blitz for the Sea Gulls (11-0, 1-0 CLC) in the opening minutes, firing in the first two tallies on feeds from
Ty Keaton and
John DeFazio before
Brice Bromwell joined the early fun at the 12:52 mark. The Cougars (8-3, 0-1 CLC) parried with a 5-0 run to close the opening quarter.
The hosts punched back with four straight goals as
Riley Strub split up goals from Della and Bromwell (both set up by Keaton) with a pair of solo scores to reclaim a 7-5 lead with 10:44 to play in the half. Della cashed in a find from Bromwell with just under six minutes left and Keaton found an unassisted finish to offset a pair of Kean goals and lead 9-7 at the break.
The 14-1 jaunt in the final 30 minutes began with a 5-0 third frame favoring the maroon and gold. Keaton, Strub and Bromwell all made repeat trips to the scoring column in the period's first eight minutes before SU's leading goal-scorer tacked on two more in a two-minute stretch to balloon the lead to seven through 45 minutes, 14-7.
Salisbury roped in nine fourth-quarter goals, the squad's highest output in a single quarter since last season's 18-7 win over Swarthmore in the third round of the Big Dance. Four Sea Gulls –
Trent Lucovich,
Lucas Ingley,
Brayden Velasquez and
Joey Halloran – jostled the netting in the final 15, while the Sea Gulls took full advantage of a two-minute non-releasable with four man-up goals in the frame.
