SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 5 Salisbury University Field Hockey program earned a 5-1 victory over Swarthmore College Tuesday night inside Sea Gull Stadium to open the 2026 season.
The game was scoreless through the first quarter as both teams saw their first action of the season. Salisbury (1-0) had chances with three shots and two penalty corners, but Swarthmore stood their ground early. With just under six minutes remaining in the second quarter,
Morgan Davis got the scoring started for Salisbury off a double assist from the freshman tandem of
Ryan Lowe and
Layla Kent. The Sea Gulls headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead, outshooting the Garnet 9-0 and holding five more penalty corner chances.
Salisbury's offense started clicking on all cylinders in the third quarter of action, posting three goals.
Alex Kupper and
Tessa Gray scored goals, while Davis added her second of the game. Lowe racked up her second and third assists on the night off the first two goals, while
Devon DeGregory and
Kelly Webber tallied the second double assist of the game on the third goal of the third quarter.
Layla Kent tallied her first goal as a Sea Gull in the fourth quarter of action to help Salisbury close out the 5-1 season opening win.
Maddie Castaneda posted her first career win in the goal for SU in her first career start as a freshman with two saves.
Kaitlin Cashman also saw time in goal on a very meaningful night for her family.
Game Notes
- Davis posted her two goals on just two shots on target.
- Kent tallied the most shots on the night for SU with five, three being on target. Fellow freshman,
Baylie Williamson, posted four shots with two on target.
- Lowe finished with three assists in her Sea Gull debut.
- Salisbury outshot Swarthmore 21-4, putting 12 of those shots on target.
- SU also tallied six more penalty corners than SC (8-2).
The Sea Gulls are back in action on the road this Sunday, September 6th, at 1 p.m. as they take on Stockton University.
