ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. –
Devon DeGregory converted her second overtime penalty stroke of the season, leading the second-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team past the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
The teams battled to a scoreless first quarter, and neither side could break through in the second, sending the game into halftime with no score.
Tessa Gray put all three of her first-half shots on target but was turned away by Seahawk keeper Sophia Kent each time.
SU managed just two more shots on goal across the third and fourth quarters, extending the scoreless deadlock into overtime. Then in the fourth minute of the extra session, the Gulls drew a foul inside the shooting circle, setting up DeGregory for her second sudden-victory penalty stroke in four games.
GAME NOTES
- Devon DeGregory netted her second goal of the season, adding onto an overtime penalty stroke to beat then-No. 9 Messiah on Sept. 12.
- Tessa Gray took four of the Sea Gulls' six shots on goal for the afternoon.
- Maddie Castaneda registered one save on the only on-target attempt by the Seahawks.
- Salisbury outshot SMC 22-2 overall and took 16 penalty corners to the Seahawks' two.
The Sea Gulls will close the book on September at home against York (Pa.) on Wednesday, with opening pushback slated for 6 p.m.
