WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's golf team entered the clubhouse within 10 strokes of the top of the field following the conclusion of the first day of the DIII Northeast Elite tournament on Sunday at Williamsport Country Club.
The Sea Gulls are currently 14 over par, tied with Hamilton and Allegheny for sixth in a crowded field of 18 top-shelf regional programs. Gettysburg (+4), Franklin & Marshall (+7), and Penn State Altoona (+9) finished the day top-three, while Swarthmore and Stevens (+10) tied for fourth directly above SU. Play was suspended due to darkness with the Gulls one of seven teams with holes still to play in the first round.
ROUND NOTES
- Colton Thomas carded his best-ever round of collegiate golf, shooting a one-under 70 to tie for the third-lowest score in modern Sea Gull history. The Bennett High School product chipped in five birdies against four bogeys, catching fire late for three straight birdies on 15, 16, and 17, before shooting par on 18. Thomas is tied with three others for the top of the individual field of 90 golfers.
- Ryan Henneman capped his round just one shot back of Thomas and the co-leaders, posting an even-par 71 with two birdies and two bogeys. He is one of five players tied for fifth on the leaderboard.
- Cole Velardo was the only SU player not to finish his round before sundown; with two holes remaining on his round he is currently seven over par and tied for 62nd individually.
- Evan Oglesby and Parker Pruitt each carded an eight-over 79, good for a 67th-place tie halfway through the event.
Thomas and the Sea Gulls will look to stand tall among the best of the best on the final day of the Northeast Elite. Round 1 will resume at 9 a.m. on Monday, with Round 2 set to begin at 10 a.m.
