Salisbury blanks Goucher in CAC opener

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams earned their first Capital Athletic Conference victories of the 2007 season with 9-0 shutouts against Goucher College here Saturday.

The Sea Gull men's team (5-0, 1-0 CAC) also defeated Dickinson College 7-2 earlier in the day in a non-conference match.

The top four men's seeds went a combined 8-0 for the day. Sophomore Matt Nicholson won both No. 1 single matches in straight sets. Junior Brendan Kincaid, the No. 2 single for SU, went 2-0 as well and paired with Nicholson to win both No. 1 doubles matches. The Sea Gulls' two set backs came against Dickinson where the Red Devils won the No. 5 singles match and the No. 3 doubles match. Freshman Evan Thomas continues to impress early on in the season at the No. 4 singles spot where he is a perfect 4-0 and 5-0 overall in dual matches. Senior Sean Larson is also 5-0 for the season (2-0 at No. 5 singles, 3-0 at No. 6 singles) in dual matches.

Salisbury's women's team (2-3, 1-0 CAC) won its second straight 9-0 decision this week as the Gulls won every match in straight sets against the Gophers. Senior Erika Mitry defeated Carly Heinz, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match. Mitry and teammate Jenny Rosler combined to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-0 against Goucher. Freshmen Rachel Iosue and Kelly Fahrner ran their season records to 4-1 with their straight set victories.

The Sea Gulls are off next week as they will be making final preparations for their 2007 Spring Break trip to California.
