SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
and women's tennis teams earned their first Capital Athletic
Conference victories of the 2007 season with 9-0 shutouts against
Goucher College here Saturday.
The Sea Gull men's team (5-0, 1-0 CAC) also defeated Dickinson
College 7-2 earlier in the day in a non-conference match.
The top four men's seeds went a combined 8-0 for the day.
Sophomore Matt Nicholson won both No. 1 single
matches in straight sets. Junior Brendan Kincaid,
the No. 2 single for SU, went 2-0 as well and paired with Nicholson
to win both No. 1 doubles matches. The Sea Gulls' two set backs
came against Dickinson where the Red Devils won the No. 5 singles
match and the No. 3 doubles match. Freshman Evan
Thomas continues to impress early on in the season at the
No. 4 singles spot where he is a perfect 4-0 and 5-0 overall in
dual matches. Senior Sean Larson is also 5-0 for
the season (2-0 at No. 5 singles, 3-0 at No. 6 singles) in dual
matches.
Salisbury's women's team (2-3, 1-0 CAC) won its second straight
9-0 decision this week as the Gulls won every match in straight
sets against the Gophers. Senior Erika Mitry
defeated Carly Heinz, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match. Mitry
and teammate Jenny Rosler combined to win the No.
1 doubles match 8-0 against Goucher. Freshmen Rachel
Iosue and Kelly Fahrner ran their season
records to 4-1 with their straight set victories.
The Sea Gulls are off next week as they will be making final
preparations for their 2007 Spring Break trip to California.
