NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University
men's tennis team doubled up Christopher Newport University 6-3
here Sunday in a match against two Atlantic South region ranked
teams. The Sea Gulls (9-2), ranked No. 8 in the region, won their
fourth straight match of the week as SU went 3-0 for the weekend
against in-region opponents.
Christopher Newport (6-3), ranked No. 12 in the region, won the
No. 2 singles match and two of the three doubles matches.
SU sophomore Matt Nicholson, ranked No. 14 in
the region, defeated CNU's Eddie Glidewell in the No. 1 singles
match 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Captains' John Mook, ranked No. 15 in the
region, defeated SU junior Brendan Kincaid in
straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Salisbury won three of the remaining four
singles matches in straight sets.
CNU gained ground on SU in doubles as the team of Glidewell and
Mook (ranked No. 8 in the region) took down Nicholson and Kincaid
(ranked No. 6 in the region) 9-8 (8-6). The Captains also won the
No. 3 doubles match. The SU freshmen team of Scott
Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas secured the Sea
Gull point in No. 2 doubles with a 9-7 win.
Salisbury now turns its attention to the Capital Athletic
Conference where the Sea Gulls will face three conference teams
this week. First up is a road match against St. Mary's (Md.)
College on Wednesday, March 28.
