SALISBURY, Md. - The University of Mary
Washington prevailed in a match-up of Capital Athletic Conference
men's tennis rivals here Saturday with a 7-2 win over Salisbury
University. UMW (11-5 overall, 3-0 CAC), ranked No. 9 nationally
and No. 2 in the Atlantic South region, snapped Salisbury's
six-game win streak.
The Sea Gulls (11-3, 3-1 CAC), ranked No. 8 in the region,
challenged Mary Washington in many tight matches. Matt
Nicholson and Brendan Kincaid,
Salisbury's top two singles players, each dominated their opponent
in the first set. However, in both matches, Mary Washington rallied
to win.
Hometown freshman Evan Thomas recorded
Salisbury's only singles point with a win over Eddie Carver 6-2,
6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2). Thomas (14-0) teamed with fellow freshman
Scott Burtzlaff for the lone Sea Gull doubles
point as they defeated John James and Jon Pollack 8-6 in No. 2
doubles.
Mary Washington proved it is still the team to beat in the CAC
but Salisbury showed improvement from a year ago when UMW swept SU,
7-0.
The Sea Gulls travel to face Hood College in a conference dual
match on Tuesday, April 3, at 3:30 pm.
