FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Even though the
second-seeded Salisbury University men's tennis team lost the 2007
Capital Athletic Conference championship to top-seed and nationally
ranked University of Mary Washington 6-3 here on Saturday afternoon
the future looks bright for the maroon and gold.
Salisbury's freshmen helped to secure the three points the Sea
Gulls (16-7) earned against No. 14 Mary Washington (21-8).
Scott Burtzlaff (17-4) won at No. 2 singles 6-4,
6-2 against Randy Loden, who is ranked No. 21 in the Atlantic South
region. Evan Thomas (20-2) followed with a
straight set victory over Jason Dunn in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Sasha Felikson put up a good fight at
No. 4 singles as he lost 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, Burtzlaff teamed with junior Brendan Kincaid to
defeat UMW's John James and Zach Detwiler at No. 1 doubles, 9-7.
Burtzlaff and Kincaid have a combined record of 5-1 and are ranked
No. 7 in the region.
This is the eighth consecutive CAC title for the Eagles, ranked
No. 4 in the region. SU last won the championship in 1999, which
capped off a four-year championship run for the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury, ranked No. 9 in the region, will host Washington
(Md.) College, ranked No. 15 in the region, on Wednesday, April 25
at 3:30 p.m. in the final home match for the Gulls this season.
