UMW wins CAC title again, future bright for SU

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Even though the second-seeded Salisbury University men's tennis team lost the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship to top-seed and nationally ranked University of Mary Washington 6-3 here on Saturday afternoon the future looks bright for the maroon and gold.

Salisbury's freshmen helped to secure the three points the Sea Gulls (16-7) earned against No. 14 Mary Washington (21-8). Scott Burtzlaff (17-4) won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2 against Randy Loden, who is ranked No. 21 in the Atlantic South region. Evan Thomas (20-2) followed with a straight set victory over Jason Dunn in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Sasha Felikson put up a good fight at No. 4 singles as he lost 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Burtzlaff teamed with junior Brendan Kincaid to defeat UMW's John James and Zach Detwiler at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. Burtzlaff and Kincaid have a combined record of 5-1 and are ranked No. 7 in the region.

This is the eighth consecutive CAC title for the Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the region. SU last won the championship in 1999, which capped off a four-year championship run for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury, ranked No. 9 in the region, will host Washington (Md.) College, ranked No. 15 in the region, on Wednesday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m. in the final home match for the Gulls this season.
