FREDERICK, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team defeated the Blazers of Hood College 6-0 in a Capital
Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls (11-3-2, 4-2 CAC) used a ferocious offensive
attack that tallied 46 shots, 21 of which were on goal. Freshman
forward Sam Forline registered two goals, while
junior midfielder Alex Hargrove, sophomore
midfielder Ben DeLisle, sophomore midfielder
Dave Corrigan and junior midfielder Chas
Gray all scored one goal apiece. SU had 15 different
players register shots in the game with junior midfielder
Kyle Sterling leading the way with seven. The 46
shots are the second most this season by the Sea Gulls, who had 50
against Gallaudet University on September 16.
Salisbury wasted little time to score the game's first goal as
DeLisle headed home a Scott Sparrow pass 32
seconds into the match. Hargrove made the score 2-0 on an
unassisted goal in the 24th minute. SU held the two-goal advantage
as the teams went into halftime.
SU added four second half goals in the final 18 minutes of play.
The four-goal run was highlighted by Forline's back-to-back goals
in the 72nd and 78th minute. Sophomore forward Chris
Finney was credited with assists on both of Forline's
goals. SU closed out the day with goals from Corrigan and
Gray. Junior defenseman Benjamin Reed recorded the
assist on Gray's goal in the 88th minute off the corner kick.
Hood (4-10, 1-5 CAC) was led by goalkeeper Shawn Fernholtz who
had 15 saves on the day. SU junior stalwart goalie Greg
Wellinghoff (one save) recorded the win to improve his
record to 9-2-2. Salisbury outshot the Blazers, 46-2, and held an
11-0 advantage in corner kicks. This is the eighth shutout this
season for the Sea Gulls.
The maroon and gold will return home to take on Marymount (Va.)
University on Wednesday, October 22, for a 4 p.m. CAC game at the
SU Soccer Complex. The game will mark the final regular-season home
game for seniors Romaine Bruney, Ryan
