SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
and women's tennis teams split Friday's non-conference matchup with
New York University on Leap Day at the Indoor Tennis Center. SU's
men's team captured a 7-2 victory over the Violets while the Sea
Gull women's team got swept by NYU, 9-0.
The men's matchup featured two squads ranked in their respective
regions. Salisbury (1-0) is ranked 10th in the Atlantic South
region while NYU (1-2) is 14th in the Northeast region.
In singles play NYU captured book-end wins as the Violets won at
No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Salisbury's Matt
Nicholson, ranked 16th in the Atlantic South region for
singles, lost to NYU's No. 1 singles player Mikhail Gurevich,
ranked 14th in the Northeast region for singles, 1-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Salisbury won four singles points as senior Brendan
Kincaid, sophomores Scott Burtzlaff and
Evan Thomas and freshman David
Lupinetti notched wins for the Sea Gulls.
SU swept the three men's doubles matches as the No. 1 singles
pair of Kincaid and Burtzlaff took down Craig Berger and Gurevich,
8-2. Nicholson and Thomas won at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win
followed by the No. 3 doubles pair of sophomore Marcus
Robinson and freshman Andrew Nottage also
with an 8-4 win.
On the women's side, Salisbury (1-1) could not find its way
against New York University as the Sea Gulls got swept for the
first time this season. Junior Hannah Parsons won
the only set of the day in No. 5 singles. Parsons won the first
set, 6-3, but could not hold on as NYU's Amanda Freedman mounted a
comeback and eventually won the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.
In doubles action, the SU sophomore team of Kelly
Fahrner and Kristen King lost a narrow
battle with NYU's Alexandra Havas and Lisa Mijovic, 9-7, in No. 3
doubles.
Salisbury will next be at home on Sunday, March 2, as the Sea
Gulls begin their Capital Athletic Conference schedule as they host
St. Mary's (Md.) College at 3 p.m. Earlier in the day, the SU men's
team will host University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at 11 a.m.
