VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University
men's and women's tennis teams were victorious at Virginia Wesleyan
College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference matches. The Sea
Gull men (6-0) shut out the Marlins, 9-0, while the Sea Gull women
(5-2) pulled out a 5-4 win.
Senior Brendan Kincaid had an excellent showing
at No. 1 singles as he swept VWC's Devin Crosby in straight sets
6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Scott Burtzlaff and freshman
David Lupinetti both played well at No. 2 and 3
singles, respectively, against the Marlins' Tom Popomaronis and Tim
Sanford. Burtzlaff won 6-0, 6-1 and Lupinetti took his match 6-0,
6-2. At No. 4 and 5 singles, Salisbury junior Sasha
Felikson and freshman Andrew Nottage both
won 6-1, 6-0 against Scott Montgomery and Lee Cebula, respectively.
Sophomore Marcus Robinson defeated Jamie Griffin
6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to complete the sweep.
In doubles play, Salisbury was led by its No. 1 pair Kincaid and
Burtzlaff who won 8-0 over Tom Popomaronis and Lee Cebula. The SU
No. 2 duo of Nottage and Robinson teamed up against Stanford and
Crosby to win 8-1. The Sea Gull men finished their match sweep with
Felikson and Lupinetti's 8-1 defeat over Montgomery and Griffin.
On the women's side, Salisbury split with Virginia Wesleyan in
singles action. The Marlins took points in No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5
singles. SU junior Anna Marie Kable lost to Imee
Bautista at No. 1 singles in the third set 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Sea Gull
sophomore Kelly Fahrner was defeated by VWC's
Megan Crook 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Sophomore Jackie
Burr was beaten by Meredith Willett at No. 5 singles as
the Marlins won their second match of the day with a third set win,
6-3, 5-7, 11-9.
The Sea Gulls got on the board with wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No.
6 singles. SU sophomore Rachel Iosue beat Keira
McMillan 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Juniors Robyn
Wendell followed at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Junior Hannah Parsons earned the final point for
the Sea Gulls at No. 6 singles. She defeated Oliva Casero 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Salisbury's No. 1 doubles team of Kable and
Burr collaborated to beat Crook and Bautista, 9-7. VWC won a point
at No. 2 doubles as McMillan and Shannon Sabo defeated Wendell and
Parsons, 8-3. The Sea Gulls took the final point in doubles as
Fahrner and Iosue won 8-1 over Casreo and Willett.
The Salisbury University tennis program will travel to York,
Pa., Friday, March 14, to play the Spartans of York (Pa.) College
in a Capital Athletic Conference match at 3 p.m. The women will
shoot for their fifth straight victory as the men hope to continue
their perfect season.
