BALTIMORE - The No. 12 Salisbury University
men's tennis team suffered its second loss in eight days as the Sea
Gulls dropped a 6-3 decision on the road Sunday against No. 22
Johns Hopkins University. All three losses suffered by the Sea
Gulls this season have come against nationally ranked teams.
Salisbury (15-3), ranked No. 11 in the Atlantic South region,
was slated to face Goucher College in another non-conference match
later on Sunday afternoon but weather forced the teams to postpone
the engagement. No make-up date or time has been set.
Johns Hopkins (10-5), ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic South region,
got off to a strong start as the Blue Jays swept the three doubles
matches. JHU's Joe Vasoontara and Casey Blythe, ranked No. 11 in
the nation in doubles and tops in the region, took down senior
Brendan Kincaid and sophomore Scott
Burtzlaff, ranked No. 10 in the region, 8-2 at first
doubles. Salisbury sophomore Marcus Robinson
and freshman Andrew Nottage put up a fight at No.
3 doubles as they fell to Rafel Roberti and Matt Naftilan, 7-9.
Salisbury got on the board with points in singles action as the
maroon and gold won at second, fourth and fifth. Junior
Matt Nicholson, ranked 10th in the region,
defeated Vasoontara, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Sophomore
Evan Thomas needed a third-set at No. 4 singles to
beat Blythe, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Freshman David
Lupinetti battled with Peter Vale at fifth singles and
prevailed with a 7-6, 7-5 victory.
The Blue Jays countered with single wins at first, third and
sixth. David Maldow, second in the region, beat Kincaid, 13th in
the region, at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2. Hopkins' Andrew Wang, 15th
in the region, won at No. 3 singles over Burtzlaff, 6-1, 6-1.
Roberti secured the final point for the Jays at No. 6 singles with
a 6-2, 6-4 win over SU's Sasha Felikson.
The Sea Gulls return home to face No. 16 Washington & Lee
University on Monday, April 14, at 3:30 p.m.
