Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team picked up a 5-1 victory over Hood College on a cold and
rainy day at Sea Gull Stadium Saturday. The Sea Gulls (12-2-1,
6-0-1 Capital Athletic Conference) were forced to play today's
contest at Sea Gull Stadium due to the inclement weather in the
area.
SU broke things open quickly when in the seventh minute junior
defender Justin Lambert (Silver
Spring, Md.) collected a deflected ball and shot the
ball into the bottom left corner. The Blazers (2-11, 0-5 CAC) would
answer, when in the 37th minute they scored off of a Jaime Ramirez
free kick when Carlin Rabie headed the ball into the back of the
net. The Sea Gulls would regain the lead just a few minutes before
halftime when junior forward Chris Finney (Columbia,
Md.) passed the ball on to the foot of junior forward
Mike
Napolitano (Ellicott City, Md.) who flicked it over
the Hood goalkeeper's head. The Sea Gulls outshot the Blazers 19-1
in the first half and held a 10-0 corner kick advantage.
The Sea Gulls would strike quickly, just 11 seconds, into the
second half when senior midfielder Alex Hargrove (Clarks
Summit, Pa.) collected the ball and played it through
the middle of the field where senior midfielder Kyle Sterling (Salisbury,
Md.) rifled the ball past the Hood goalkeeper for a
3-1 lead. A little more than a minute later, senior forward
Nick Malone
(Salisbury, Md.) served in a corner kick to the far
post which junior defender Casey Rector (Ellicott
City, Md.) headed into the back of the net. SU would
close the scoring out in the 52nd minute when Sterling played in a
cross from the right side that senior midfielder Benjamin Reed (Arnold,
Md.) headed across the goal line.
For the match the Sea Gulls held a dominating 33-2 shots
advantage, and earned 16 corner kicks compared to zero for the
Blazers. Senior goalkeeper Josh Scotton (Delmar,
Md.) collected his fourth win of the season as he is
now 4-0 on the year. Freshman goalkeeper Steven Evans (Salisbury,
Md.) played the final 15:18 in the net for the Sea
Gulls. William Lane takes the loss for the Blazers as he finished
with 10 saves in the match, including seven in the first half.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action this Wednesday when they
host No. 1 Christopher Newport University at the SU Soccer Complex
at 3:30 p.m. The Captains enter Wednesday's game with a record of
12-1, with their only loss of the season a 2-1 defeat at the hands
of then No. 1 Messiah College on Sept. 12. In 2008, Salisbury and
CNU played to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes.
