SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
tennis programs swept York (Pa.) College, 9-0, on Saturday
afternoon at the outdoor tennis courts in the Capital Athletic
Conference opener for the Sea Gulls.
The Salisbury men's team (7-4, 1-0 CAC), ranked seventh in the
Atlantic South region, swept every singles match except No. 3
singles. SU sophomore David Lupinetti was the only
Sea Gull to shutout a Spartan as he beat York's Joel Trimmer 6-0,
6-0 at second singles. Salisbury received singles wins from junior
Evan Thomas (first singles), sophomore
Andrew Nottage (fourth singles), junior
Marcus Robinson (fifth singles) and sophomore
Giorgio Athans (sixth singles). At No. 3 singles,
freshman Daniel Barnas was given a tough match by
the Spartan's Paul Graci. Barnas lost the first set 4-6 before he
rebounded to win the second set 6-4 and the third and final set,
10-3. The Sea Gulls entered singles play up 3-0. York drops to 4-7
this season and 1-2 in the conference.
The Salisbury women's team (7-2, 1-0 CAC), ranked ninth in the
Atlantic South region, made quick work of the Spartans (1-7, 0-1
CAC) as the Sea Gulls swept three points at doubles before they
earned six points in singles play. SU had two shutout victories at
singles from junior Kelly Fahrner (third singles)
and senior Anna Marie Kable (fourth singles).
Junior Jackie Burr (first singles), junior
Rachel Iosue (second singles), senior
Robyn Wendell (fifth singles) and junior
Kristen King (sixth singles) won their respective
matches.
SU was slated to travel to Wesley College earlier in the day for
conference matches but that was postponed due to the weather and
poor court conditions. No make-up date has been announced at this
time.
The Sea Gulls are slated to partake in two away contests
tomorrow (March 29), weather permitting, in the Baltimore metro
region. In the morning, the SU men's team will face Hood College at
11 a.m. in Frederick, Md., while the women play at Stevenson
University at the same time. The two teams will swap places at 3
p.m. with the men going to Stevenson and the women at Hood.
