FREDERICK, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
and women's tennis team braved the elements on a rain soaked Sunday
as the Sea Gulls swept Capital Athletic Conference doubleheaders
against Hood College and Stevenson University. The two teams split
up their days as one began in Frederick, Md., against Hood while
the other was in Owings Mills, Md., to take on Stevenson.
On the men's side, Salisbury (9-4, 3-0 CAC) won back-to-back 9-0
shutouts over Stevenson and Hood College after the teams waited out
rain delays and took the time to squeegee and dry the courts.
The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic South region, made
quick work of Stevenson (2-4, 2-2 CAC) to begin the day. No.
1 and No. 2 doubles picked up easy wins with 8-1 victories while
the third doubles pairing won 8-6 to give SU all three doubles
points. The Gulls won all six singles' points, using pro set
scoring, as they only dropped 12 sets against the Mustangs. No. 1
and No. 2 singles posted 8-0 shutout victories. SU won the last
four singles' points with scores of 8-1, 8-3, 8-3 and 8-5 to finish
the first match.
In the second match against Hood (3-11, 1-2 CAC) the Sea Gulls
spent over five hours before the match working to help make
conditions playable but it did not faze them as they picked up
their sixth consecutive victory. Salisbury started the contest off
in great fashion with three consecutive victories in doubles.
Sophomore David Lupinetti and junior
Marcus Robinson posted an 8-4 victory over Mike
Hardman and Carter Reitman at No. 1 doubles. At second doubles,
sophomore Giorgio Athans and freshman
Curtis Quandt teamed up to drop David Blowe and
Andrew Blowe, 8-1. Sophomore Matt Copeland and
freshman Justin Smith played at No. 3 doubles and
pinned an 8-2 decision over Garrett Loomer and Kenny Smith.
The Sea Gulls won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Lupinetti posted the first straight set shutout of the match with a
6-0, 6-0 victory over David Blowe at No. 1 singles. Robinson
collected a 6-3, 6-1 win over Reitman at No. 2 singles while Athans
won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Quandt posted the second straight
set shutout of singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles
over Andrew Blowe. Smith dropped Phil Yerby 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5
singles while Copeland finished off the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3
victory over Loomer at No. 6 singles.
Salisbury was equally as impressive on the women's side as the
Sea Gulls defeated Hood 6-1 to pick up their second CAC victory of
the season. The Sea Gulls had their action cancelled at No. 1 and
No. 3 singles due to rain. Junior Jackie Burr and
senior Anna Marie Kable defeated Caitlin
Erickson and Laura Saad, 8-0 at first doubles, while junior
Kristen King and senior Robyn
Wendell defeated Dani Hunt and C. Ocampos-Berry 8-2
at second doubles. SU's tandem of sophomore Julia
Glanz and freshman Alix Royston finished
off the Blazers at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory over
Jillian Elkaim and Larisa Buriak. In singles action, Kable won
8-4 over Ocampos-Berry at No. 2 singles, King won
8-0 over Saad at No. 4 singles and Glanz won
8-1 over Hunt at No. 5 singles. The Blazers only victory
came at No. 6 singles when Erickson defeated
freshman Amy Worthington 8-2.
In the second match against the Mustangs, Salisbury and
Stevenson were forced to find shelter and use an indoor tennis
facility for an hour to complete the match. The doubles pairings
won 8-1, 8-3 and 8-0. In singles play, the teams used pro set
scoring once more as Burr defeated Maura Bernstein 8-0 and Glanz
posted an 8-3 victory over Izzy Kaiser to clinch the match for the
Sea Gulls.
The men's and women's tennis programs were slated to travel to
St. Mary's (Md.) College for a twinbill on Wednesday, April 1, but
those matches have been moved to Monday, April 13, at 3:30 p.m.
