SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
and women's tennis teams swept non-conference matches against
visiting New York University on a picturesque Saturday afternoon at
the outdoor courts. Salisbury's men's team, ranked No. 22 in the
nation and sixth in the Atlantic South region, shut out the Violets
9-0 while the women's team, ranked ninth in the region, won 6-3.
Salisbury (2-1) made quick work on NYU (1-3), ranked 13th in the
Northeast region, in the men's match. SU's No. 1 doubles team of
juniors Scott Burtzlaff and Evan
Thomas swept NYU's Craig Berger and Calvin Chou.
Burtzlaff-Thomas did not allow a single game point in the 8-0
victory. At second doubles, freshman Daniel Barnas
and sophomore Andrew Nottage fared well against
Matthew Gross and Eugene Tsarevskiy with an 8-3 win. Third doubles
featured sophomore David Lupinetti and junior
Marcus Robinson who defeated Philip Rosenstein and
Pavel Zhuravlev, 8-3.
In singles action, Nottage recorded the first win of the day
with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alex Stoler. The second match to
finish was Lupinetti at third singles as he defeated Jason Sacher
6-4, 6-2. The win clinched the match for the Sea Gulls but the
maroon and gold did not stop there up 5-0.
Burtzlaff, ranked 25th in the Atlantic South region, won at No.
1 singles over NYU's Berger with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Thomas did not
disappoint at second singles as he beat Chou 6-4, 6-3. SU senior
Sasha Felikson recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win over NYU's
Zhuravlev at No. 5 singles. Barnas closed out the shutout with the
only match that needed a third set. Barnas dropped the first set
4-6 to Tsarevskiy at fourth singles before the Sea Gull rallied to
win the final two sets 6-2, 6-3.
Last season, Salisbury's women's team got swept by NYU but did
not have any problems against the Violets (1-5), ranked 17th in
their region, on the home courts. The Sea Gulls (2-0) swept the
three doubles points to take a 3-0 lead into the singles
competition where the two teams split the three points.
First doubles featured junior Jackie Burr and
senior Anna Marie Kable against NYU's duo of
Elizabeth Feldman and Liz Stachtiaris who the Sea Gulls defeated
8-3. SU juniors Rachel Iosue and Kelly
Fahrner won at second doubles with an 8-4 win over
Lena-Sophie Krups and Stephanie Tu. Sophomore Angela
Tenaglia and senior Robyn Wendell fared
well against Lisa Mijovic and Sara Joo at third doubles with an 8-1
victory.
In singles action, Burr was victorious at first singles, as she
defeated Stachtiaris 6-4, 6-1. Iosue took down Stephanie Tu 6-3,
7-5 at No. 2 singles. SU dropped the third and fourth singles
matches in three sets after leading 1-0. Elizabeth Feldman defeated
Fahrner 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Kable fell to Mijovic 1-6, 6-2, 6-4,
respectively. The Sea Gulls also dropped a point at No. 5 singles
as Wendell lost to Krups 6-4, 6-4. Junior Kristen
King defeated Joo 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The SU men's team will face North Carolina Wesleyan tomorrow
(Sunday, March 8) at 11 a.m. On Friday evening, North Carolina
Wesleyan defeated NYU, 5-4, here in Salisbury, Md. Salisbury's
women's team will next host a match Tuesday, March 10, against Penn
State-Abington at 3 p.m.
