SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
and women's tennis programs picked up their 10th victories of the
2009 season on Thursday with a clean sweep of Virginia Wesleyan
College. The home non-conference matches were held on the SU
Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The SU women's team (10-2), ranked ninth in the Atlantic South
region, earned its fifth shutout this season. The Sea Gulls jumped
out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles play before SU swept the
singles' pairings. Juniors Jackie Burr (No. 1
singles), Rachel Iosue (No. 2 singles) and
Kelly Fahrner (No. 3 singles) secured the top
three singles' points. Seniors Anna Marie Kable
(No. 4 singles) and Robyn Wendell (No. 5 singles)
won easily in straight sets. Junior Kristen King
won by default at No. 6 singles as the Marlins (7-2) did not have a
player available.
SU coach Randy Halfpap was able to start
several young players against the Marlins (0-10) on the men's side
as the Sea Gulls (10-4), ranked seventh in the region, made quick
work of VWC. The Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles as
the maroon and gold posted two 8-0 victories against the Marlins.
Salisbury won all its singles matches in straight sets. SU received
wins at singles from freshman Daniel Barnas (No. 1
singles), sophomore Giorgio Athans (No. 2
singles), junior Marcus Robinson (No. 3 singles),
freshman Curtis Quandt (No. 4 singles), freshman
Justin Smith (No. 5 singles) and sophomore
Matt Copeland (No. 6 singles).
The SU men will now turn their sights to Saturday's highly
anticipated home showdown with Capital Athletic Conference
powerhouse University of Mary Washington, who enters ranked No. 16
in the nation. SU and UMW will begin play at 1 p.m. Salisbury's
women's team will host Muhlenberg College on Sunday, April 5, at 11
a.m.
