Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The
No. 3-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team
welcomed The College of Wooster to Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday
evening in the Sea Gulls' first night game of the season. The
match was relatively close in the first half, but the maroon and
gold shot out of the gates in the second half and defeated the
Fighting Scots, 15-9.
Salisbury
(7-0) opened up the game by swiftly scoring the first four goals,
but the first half between the Sea Gulls and Fighting Scots was
still closely contested; Wooster (2-3) answered back
Salisbury's goals with four goals of its own, tying up the
game with 6:36 left to play in the half. Undeterred, the Sea Gulls
notched two goals within 23 seconds of each other to regain the
lead and take the two-goal advantage into the second half. Scoring
was certainly balanced in the first half, as six different Sea
Gulls netted goals. The one significant difference in first-half
statistics was Salisbury's penalties (six) compared to
Wooster's one, leading to over five minutes of man-up
opportunities for the Fighting Scots. They capitalized on those
opportunities, scoring three of their four first-half goals with
Salisbury down a player.
The Sea
Gulls' scoring came in bursts in the second half as they
ticked off the first three goals before Wooster's Pat Coyne
scored just over 14 minutes into the third period. The other burst
came in the fourth quarter when the Sea Gulls netted four straight
goals to take a 14-6 lead over the Fighting Scots, and Salisbury
would maintain its lead for the remainder of the game to capture
its seventh victory of the season.
Salisbury was led by senior attackman Jake
DeLillo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and sophomore
attackman Matt Cannone (Bayport, N.Y.), who each
scored a team-high three goals in the win. Sophomores Sean
Hickey (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Craig
Burnett (North Wales, Pa.) netted their first goals of
the season.
The Sea
Gulls will remain at home for their next two games, starting with a
match against Eastern Connecticut State on March 21 at 1 p.m.
Salisbury's following contest, and its first Capital Athletic
Conference match-up of the season, will be on March 24 against CAC
opponent Wesley College. The first face-off is set for 7
p.m.
