YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University
tennis teams opened up Capital Athletic Conference play for the
2010 season on Tuesday and each team came away with a convincing
win at York (Pa.) College. The men's team topped the Spartans
8-1 while the women won their match, their first competition of the
season, 9-0.
The men's team (3-1, 1-0 CAC) got doubles wins by the
teams of seniors Evan Thomas
(Salisbury, Md.)/Scott
Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.)/senior
Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.). Thomas and
Burtzlaff took their match 8-0, the duo is 5-2 this season having
collected three matches by the 8-0 score.
The Sea Gulls swept the six singles matches, with Thomas taking
the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-0. Nottage and Robinson won at No. 2 and 3
singles, respectively. Each took three sets to earn their
victories. Freshman Henry
Stuhler (Bay Head, N.J.), sophomore Justin
Smith (New Windsor, Md.) and sophomore Kyle Schneck (Annapolis, Md.) won the other
singles matches. The win for Smith was his first of the season.
The Salisbury women's team (1-0, 1-0 CAC) toppled the
Spartans in impressive fashion. The Sea Gulls swept the doubles
matches with none of the three ending with a score closer than 8-1.
Senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) and freshman
Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) took the
top singles match 8-0 while the teams of senior Rachel
Iosue (Damascus, Md.)/senior Kelly
Fahrner (Germantown, Md.) and freshman Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.)/junior Angela Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) each won
8-1.
Poppe, Tenaglia, Elaina Iosue and freshman Victoria Handlin (Annapolis, Md.) claimed the
top four singles wins in straight matches, with their opponents
claiming no more than five total games in any of the four matches.
Freshman Rachel Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) and
sophomore Amy
Worthington (Huntingtown, Md.) also earned singles
wins.
The women will be back in action Thursday afternoon when they
host Swarthmore in the Sea Gulls' home opener. The match is
scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The men will take to the courts
next on the west coast during their spring trip to California.
Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday against Amherst College
in Claremont, Calif.
