BALTIMORE - The Salisbury University men's and
women's tennis teams traveled to Johns Hopkins University on
Saturday afternoon. Despite two victories on the men's side and a
valiant effort by Salisbury's women, both teams fell to the
nationally-ranked Blue Jays.
Senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) led the
way for Salisbury as he captured the Sea Gulls' only singles win of
the day, in the No. 3 spot. Earlier in the day, he teamed up with
senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) in
doubles play to defeat the regionally No. 5-ranked Johns Hopkins
duo of David Maldow and Andrew Wang, 8-5. Burtzlaff and Thomas are
also regionally ranked, currently sitting at No. 3. The loss
brings the men's record to 11-6, 4-1 Capital Athletic
Conference.
On the women's side (10-2, 4-1 CAC), freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) put up a solid
fight in the No. 4 singles spot against Hopkins player Mallory
Willenborg, forcing the match to go to three sets.
The women will travel to Swarthmore, Pa. tomorrow, April 11, to
face Wilkes College at 11 a.m. The men will also be on the road
tomorrow, but will travel to The College of New Jersey to face the
Lions at 12 p.m.
