Tennis teams rebound after loss to Blue Jays; men defeat TCNJ, women take down Wilkes

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams may have been playing in different states on Sunday afternoon, but they both had one thing on their mind: earning a "W". Both teams did so, in convincing fashion, with the men defeating The College of New Jersey 5-4 and the women taking down Wilkes College 8-1.

On the men's side (12-6, 4-1 Capital Athletic Conference), the Sea Gulls split singles play with the Lions as both teams captured three wins; seniors Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.), along with junior Giorgio Athans (Woolwich Township, N.J.), all earned victories. Burtzlaff won decidedly in the No. 1 singles spot (6-2, 6-2) and Thomas took the win in the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Athans' contest, the No. 6 match-up, went to three sets but the junior was able to defeat TCNJ's Daniel Lee by a verdict of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

As it turned out, doubles play was the deciding factor in the contest, as the maroon and gold won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take home the win. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) and junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) took a solid 8-2 victory, while junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) and senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) teamed up in the No. 3 spot to take an 8-5 win.

Both the men and women will finish up CAC regular-season play on Tuesday, April 13, as they play CAC opponent Wesley College on the road at 3 p.m. Today's victory against Wilkes brings the women's team's record to 11-2, 4-1 CAC.

A full press release with complete results from the womens' contest against Wilkes will be available tomorrow at www.suseagulls.com.
