SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 14 Salisbury
University men's tennis team earned a convincing 9-0 win in the
Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals on Tuesday
afternoon against York (Pa.) College.
The Sea Gulls (14-6) earned three quick wins in doubles, taking
down the Spartans by scores of 8-2 in all three matches. Seniors
Scott
Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.), Evan Thomas
(Salisbury, Md.) and Marcus
Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) played what may have been
their final matches on the SU Tennis Courts, and all three came
away with a pair of wins.
Burtzlaff and Thomas, the top-ranked doubles team in the
Atlantic South Region, earned the win at No. 1 doubles while
Robinson teamed with junior David
Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) at No. 3 doubles and
sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) and
junior Andrew
Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) picked up the win at No. 2.
The Sea Gulls claimed the top five singles matches in straight
sets with Burtzlaff, at No. 1, and Nottage, at No. 4, winning 6-0,
6-0. Thomas claimed his No. 2 match 6-3, 6-1 and Robinson split his
first two sets at No. 6, 6-3 and 3-6 before claiming the
tie-breaker 10-4.
The win moves Salisbury into the CAC championship match on
Friday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington. The match is
set to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles advanced through the
semifinals, 9-0, over St. Mary's (Md.) College on Monday.
Salisbury has won four CAC titles, the last coming in 1999.
