FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The No. 21-ranked
Salisbury University men's tennis team earned several impressive
wins against the University of Mary Washington in the Capital
Athletic Conference tournament championship on Friday afternoon,
but it was not enough as the Sea Gulls fell to the No. 22-ranked
Eagles, 6-3.
Though the Sea Gulls (14-7) didn't win the title, they certainly
gave the Eagles (13-11), whose win today earned them their 11th
consecutive CAC title, a run for their money. In doubles play, the
No. 2 team of Daniel
Barnas (La Plata, Md.) and Andrew
Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) won their contest, 8-6.
Seniors Scott
Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and Evan Thomas
(Salisbury, Md.), the No. 1 team for the Gulls, narrowly lost their
doubles match to Eagles Brian Hope and Evan Goff, 8-6.
Singles play was just as intense for both teams, as three of the
six matches went to three sets to determine the victor. One match
that didn't go to three sets, though, was the No. 6 spot between
Giorgio Athans (Woolwich Township, N.J.) and
Mary Washington's Andrew Frisk, with Athans decidedly winning 6-0,
6-4. The other singles win of the day came from David
Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.), whose impressive
performace in the No. 3 spot gave him the 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win.
The match marks the end of the regular season for three
seniors: Marcus
Robinson (Cambridge, Md.), who compiled a career
record of 25-9 in singles play, along with Burtzlaff and Thomas,
who compiled career records of 66-21 and 65-20, respectively, in
doubles play. Those three, along with the rest of the team, will
await the announcement of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis
Championship tournament field to see if they receive a bid.
