FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury
University men's and women's tennis teams hit the road
on Wednesday afternoon for an in-conference match-up against the
University of Mary Washington. Despite the Sea Gulls' success
in doubles play, both teams fell to the Eagles. The loss marks the
womens' first of the season.
On the men's side (11-5, 4-1 Capital Athletic Conference),
the No. 26-ranked Eagles took a 7-2 victory over the No. 14-ranked
maroon and gold. Seniors Scott
Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.), the
reigning CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, and
Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) teamed up at No.
1 doubles to take a convincing 8-5 victory. The mens' other
win of the day, also in doubles play, was more of a nail biter but
sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) and
junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) were
able to capture the 9-8 victory in the No. 2 spot. The final score
is certainly not an indicator of effort, as three of the Sea
Gulls' six singles matches went to three sets before the
Eagles were able to capitalize.
The women's team (10-1, 4-1 CAC) fell 8-1 to No. 16 Mary
Washington. The No. 1 doubles team, comprised of freshman
Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.), who was
named CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week back on March 30, and
senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) earned a
solid 8-5 victory.
Regardless of the losses, the Sea Gulls are still a force to be
reckoned with in the CAC – both the men and women were
previously undefeated prior to today's matches. Salisbury
will look to close out regular-season conference play on a high
note as the Gulls travel to face Wesley College on April 13 at 3
p.m. Before that, though, the maroon and gold will face two
competitors on the road, starting with Johns Hopkins University on
April 10 at 3 p.m.
