Sea Gulls headed to CAC championship match following 8-1 win at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship match following an 8-1 win against St. Mary's (Md.) College on Tuesday afternoon.

The second-seeded Seahawks had beaten Salisbury in the teams' two most-recent meetings, both regular-season meetings, both by 5-4 scores. On Tuesday, a St. Mary's win was unlikely after the Gulls swept the three doubles matches.

The top Salisbury (11-11) doubles pair of senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers came up with an 8-4 win just before the No. 2 pair of senior Justin Smith and junior Adam Goldberger prevailed by the same score. Senior Curtis Quandt and freshman Nick Mancuso finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3.

Albers earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Goldberger sealed Salisbury's trip to the championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4.

Thomas Hoesman earned the Seahawks' (17-4) win at No. 3 singles, topping Quandt, 6-3, 6-3.

Smith collected a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6, Barnas prevailed 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 before Mancuso finished off his No. 5 match in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 to close out the victory for the third-seeded Sea Gulls.

The championship match will be at the tournament's top seed the University of Mary Washington, which topped York (Pa.) College, 9-0. The title match will be held on Friday afternoon.
