Spangler, Vrahnos each earn singles point as Salisbury falls, 7-2, to Haverford

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Haverford College Sunday afternoon in its final regular season match of the season.

Haverford (8-5) jumped on the Sea Gulls quickly, earning wins in all three doubles matches. Luis Acaba and Sloan Millman got past junior Shane Gunther and sophomore Nick Mancuso 8-3 after rocketing out to a 5-0 lead.

The other two matches were hard fought with Haverford taking 8-6 wins in each. At No. 1, sophomore Daniel Albers and freshman Eric Spangler fought back from down 4-1 but ultimately fell to Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein, ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South region, after pulling within 7-6.

At No. 2, senior Adam Goldberger and junior Demetri Vrahnos fell behind 6-3 before earning a break to cut the deficit to 6-5. But Andy Dougherty and Matt Romei closed out the matched 8-6.

In singles action, the Sea Gulls were paced with wins from Spangler and Vrahnos.

Spangler rolled in the first set 6-0 over Romei before closing out the second 6-2 for the maroon and gold's first point of the day at No. 2.

At No. 3, Vrahnos earned his victory in the third set super tie-breaker, 10-6, over Dougherty after the two had split sets with Dougherty taking the first 7-6 (9-7 in the tiebreak) and Vrahnos securing the second, 7-5.

Caulfield, ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South region, edged Albers 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, while Zack Mason notched a win over Goldberger 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

Himelstein earned a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over Mancuso at No. 6 before Gunther fell despite a valiant first set effort, 6-4, 6-2 to Millman. Millman earned a break to go up 5-4 in the first set before serving out and then securing the second.

The Sea Gulls (13-9) will next play in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals against St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The match will be played at the SU Tennis Courts.
