Men's tennis falls in California debut at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2015 season, falling 7-2 to No. 40 Chapman University in its opening match of the program's annual spring break trip to California.

Salisbury took one of the three doubles matches, grabbing a point at the top spot from senior Daniel Albers and junior Eric Spangler. Albers and Spangler won 8-4 at the No. 1 spot to remain unblemished with a 7-0 mark this year.

The Sea Gulls (6-1) dropped the other two doubles matches with senior Demetri Vrahnos and junior Shanon Gunther challenging at No. 2, but falling 8-5, while senior Adam Goldberger and freshman Sean Ngo took an 8-2 loss at No. 3.

Spangler improved to 7-0 at No. 2 singles, winning Salisbury's second point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The Panthers (4-3) took the other five singles matches in straight sets, with Goldberger's 6-3, 6-3 defeat at No. 6 and Vrahnos' 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 3 the closest the Sea Gulls came to their second point.

Ngo took a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 5 while Gunther dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 4 and Albers fell in the top spot, 6-1, 6-0.

The Gulls will be back on the courts on Monday, March 16, traveling to Occidental College. That match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., eastern time.
