Men's tennis rolls to second win of weekend against regionally-ranked foe

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team closed out its weekend against strong regional competition with a 7-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Haverford College.

The Sea Gulls defeated the Fords, who entered the day ranked No. 12 in the Atlantic South Region, a day after picking up a win against Franklin & Marshall College, No. 11 in the region. Last season, Salisbury took a narrow loss to F&M and two years ago, the Gulls were clipped by Haverford.

The Sea Gulls, who are currently ranked No. 9 in the region, grabbed two doubles wins with senior Daniel Albers and junior Eric Spangler remaining perfect on the young season at No. 1, with an 8-4 win, while senior Adam Goldberger and freshman Sean Ngo picked up a win by the same score at No. 3. The two pairs have combined to go 10-0 thus far in 2015.

Senior Demetri Vrahnos and junior Shanon Gunther took the only doubles loss for the Gulls, battling but falling, 8-5, at No. 2.

Albers and Spangler each grabbed wins in singles play, as well. Albers took the first set of his No. 1 singles match, 6-4, before his opponent, Luis Acaba was forced to retire. Spangler rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Vrahnos was forced to work for a 7-6 win in the opening set of his No. 3 singles match, taking the tie-breaker, 7-4, before running away with the second set, 6-0, and Gunther played in his fourth three-set match of the year, picking up the win at No. 4 , 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

Ngo earned the final singles win for the Gulls, collecting the No. 5 win, also after splitting the opening two sets for a 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 win.

Goldberger dropped his No. 6 singles match, 6-2, 6-2 to round out the scoring.

Salisbury will hit the courts at home this Friday, March 13, hosting Penn State University-Abington, with that match slated to begin at 2 p.m.
