Men's tennis falls at No. 19 Mary Washington, 6-3

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team took its first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season, falling to No. 19 University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls (11-4, 4-1 CAC) dropped all three doubles matches, with the top pair of senior Daniel Albers and junior Eric Spangler taking their first dual match loss as a doubles team since the 2013 season. The pair was undefeated in the regular season in 2014 and had won all 12 matches this season entering Wednesday's event against the Eagles' top pair of Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin. The match went to a tie-breaker, with the Mary Washington team claiming the breaker, 7-4.

Mary Washington (17-3, 6-0 CAC) took the other two doubles matches, with Salisbury's No. 3 pair of junior Shanon Gunther and freshman Sean Ngo falling 8-3 and the No. 2 duo of seniors Adam Goldberger and Demetri Vrahnos dropping an 8-2 decision to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead after doubles.

The teams split in singles play, with Salisbury getting wins from Spangler, Vrahnos, and Ngo. At No. 2, Spangler topped Gilmore, the No. 12-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, in impressive fashion, 6-4, 6-2, while Vrahnos won 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at No. 2 and Ngo collected a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win at No. 5.

Albers suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 1, while Gunther fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and Goldberger was defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Sea Gulls will return to action this Saturday, April 4 hosting Washington (Md.) College at the SU Tennis Courts, beginning at 11 a.m.
