Sea Gulls roll to 9-0 CAC win against St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team took a 9-0 victory against St. Mary's College of Maryland in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the SU Indoor Tennis Center. 

The Sea Gulls (9-7, 4-2 CAC) took the first three points of the day in doubles play against the Seahawks (7-8, 3-4 CAC). At the top spot seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther took the match with a solid 8-2 win, with big service games from Gunther. At No. 2 doubles, juniors Grant Hudson and Michael Popielski had an 8-4 victory and at No. 3 doubles the pair of sophomore Kelson Weber and freshman Andrew Rainger also took an 8-4 victory.

In singles play, Spangler picked up his sixth-straight win at No. 1, only dropping one game. In the end he came out with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At No. 2, Gunther took on St. Mary's Robert Bishop, taking the match 6-2, 6-4 and Hudson, at No. 3, had a strong 6-1, 6-3 victory.

At the No. 4, 5, and 6 spots Weber took his match 6-0, 6-0, while Popielski won 8-0 and Rainger won a solid 8-1 match, respectively, to clinch the 9-0 victory.

The Sea Gulls will be back on the courts tomorrow April 10, on the Outdoor Tennis Courts, hosting Frostburg State University and Washington (Md.) College. The Frostburg State match will begin at 10 a.m., while the Washington contest will start at 2 p.m.
