Records fall at George Mason for Sea Gulls

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track teams competed in the Mason Last Chance Meet held by George Mason University on Sunday afternoon. Both teams turned in impressive performances as personal records were broken on both sides.

Women

Junior Alison Schwartz got the Sea Gulls off and running in the 3,000-meter run breaking the school record. Schwartz posted a third-place finish crossing the finish line in a time of 10:38.58. Her time broke the school record by three seconds, which was set by Jessica Lane during the 2015-16 season.

Lane also competed in the 3,000 meter and finished just two places behind her teammate placing fifth with a time of 10:43.17.

Jamie Farley captured a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash while also recording a new personal record as well. Farley crossed the finish line in a time of 26.45 seconds breaking her previous record of 26.56 seconds, which she set at 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Championships.

Farley also earned a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line in a time of 1:00.70. Teammate Caitlyn Rishell finished just two places behind Farley, placing seventh, coming in in a time of 1:01.87.

In the field events Meghan McGowan captured another first-place finish in the high jump. McGowan cleared the bar at a height of 5' 7" to earn the top finish. Teammate Jacqueline Seymour placed seventh overall after clearing the bar at a height of 5' 1".

Men

In the track events Eric Halton got the Sea Gulls off to a great start in the 400-meter dash. Halton earned a second-place finish posting a time of 49.29 seconds, which is also a personal record for Halton. He broke his record of 49.66 seconds, which he posted last season at the ECAC Championships.

Teammates Alex Hardman and Zach Schmelz finished just behind Halton placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Hardman crossed the finish line in a time of 50.83 seconds while Schmelz came in in a time of 51.25 seconds.

In the 3,000-meter run both Branson Oduor and Connor Hesselbirg each set new personal records. Oduor placed seventh overall finishing the race in a time of 8:48.16 while Hesselbirg crossed the finish line in a time of 9:02.05. Hesselbirg broke his record of 9:12.55, which he set last year at the George Mason Winter Games.

In field events two different Sea Gulls earned recognition in both the shot put and the weight throw. Andrew Volz earned a second-place finish recording a throw of 47' 3.75" while teammate Duncan Ferrin placed seventh with a throw of 42' 1.25".

In the weight throw Ferrin posted a new personal record and a first place finish after recording a throw of 54' 11.5", which broke his previous throw of 53' 2.25" at last year's ECAC Championships. Volz finished just two places behind his teammate in third posting a throw of 48' 0".

Salisbury will compete on March 4 in the Roanoke Last Chance Qualifier. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
