Men's tennis falls at No. 16 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Thursday afternoon at No. 16 University of Mary Washington, 9-0.

The Sea Gulls (10-4, 0-1 CAC) battled through the three doubles matches, earning at least three games in each of the contests. The closest match came at No. 3, where senior Grant Hudson and freshman Garrett Malave fell 8-5.

Freshmen Ian Siew and Matthew Ryan dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Colt Williamson and Patrick MacLean lost at No. 1 by an 8-3 score.

The Eagles (11-4, 3-0 CAC) were able to seal the victory with wins at the No. 4 spot, as Hudson fell 6-2, 6-0 and at No. 3 where MacLean lost 6-1, 6-1 in singles play to give Mary Washington the five points needed for the victory.

Ryan, at No. 5, and sophomore Andrew Rainger, at No. 6, each claimed five games in their matches, with Ryan falling 6-4, 6-1 and Rainger dropping his first set 6-1 before rallying for a 6-4 defeat in the second set.

Siew had the closest singles match for the Sea Gulls, at No. 2, falling 6-2, 6-4, while Williamson's 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 1 completed the scoring.

Salisbury gets back into CAC action with three league matches this weekend, beginning with a 10:30 a.m., start at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, April 1.
