Men's tennis earns 9-0 win at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team got back into the win column, topping St. Mary's College of Maryland 9-0 on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Sea Gulls (11-4, 1-1 CAC) earned three doubles points to open the contest, with the top pair of freshmen Matthew Ryan and Ian Siew claiming an 8-1 win. Freshmen Colt Williamson and William Niessner picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3 and sophomore Andrew Rainger and Garrett Malave grabbed an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, three Sea Gulls took 6-1, 6-0 wins, putting the match away quickly. Williamson at No. 1, Ryan at No. 3, and Niessner at No. 6, all collected the lopsided victories.

Siew claimed his opening set at No. 2 by a 6-3 score before finishing the match with a 6-0 win in the second. Rainger gave up just three games, winning 6-0, 6-3 and Malave claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5.

The Sea Gulls return home on Sunday, April 2, for two matches, senior day, and recognition of Head Coach Randy Halfpap's 200th career victory. Salisbury will take on Penn State University-Harrisburg, beginning at 10 a.m., and York College of Pennsylvania, beginning at 1 p.m., with the ceremonies taking place prior to the York match.
