Sea Gulls sweep two matches on senior day

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team earned a pair of Capital Athletic Conference victories on Sunday, topping Penn State University-Harrisburg and York College of Pennsylvania.

In the first match of the day, the Sea Gulls won two of the three doubles points to begin the contest. Senior Bobby Leverich and freshman James Kwedi picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 while junior Connor Truitt and freshman Ethan Brown won 8-5 at No. 3.

Freshmen Matthew Ryan and William Niessner fell in a narrow match at No. 1 doubles, 9-7.

In singles play, Ryan at No. 2, and Kwedi at No. 5, each picked up 6-0, 6-2 wins. Freshman Ray McDermott was good for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Truitt claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6.

Niessner suffered a three-set loss at No. 2, falling 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, while Leverich was the final match on court, at No. 4, earning a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Salisbury 8, York 1

Prior to the start of the second match of the day, the Sea Gulls honored their two seniors, Leverich and Grant Hudson, who will finish their careers in 2017.

Salisbury (13-4, 3-1 CAC) swept the three doubles matches, with freshman Patrick MacLean and Colt Williamson winning 8-0 at No. 1, while freshmen Matthew Ryan and Ian Siew won 8-1 at No. 2. Hudson and freshman Garrett Malave picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.

Williamson and Siew each collected 6-1, 6-0 wins at the top-two singles spots, respectively, while sophomore Andrew Rainger won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 and Hudson won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.

Freshman Franklin Tiafoe garnered a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 and Leverich dropped a 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 contest at No. 6.

The Sea Gulls return to action next weekend, traveling to Southern Virginia University on Friday, April 7, and Frostburg State University on April 8.
